Useful Bible Studies > 2 Kings Commentary > chapter 19
Psalm 2 describes the effect in heaven when powerful rulers on earth speak proudly against God. Their words cannot upset God’s rule in heaven. So, in that Psalm, God laughs at their weakness.
The commanders of Assyria’s army led one of the most powerful armies in the world at that time. So, of course they considered themselves to be great and important men. However, that was not God’s opinion about them, because God saw their true weakness. So, God described them as mere servants who brought a message from the king of Assyria. They had spoken such proud words against God – but they were only like the boys who carried the king’s messages.
So, God would deal with the king of Assyria, who had caused all this trouble.
That king considered himself to be the greatest king in the world. He spoke as if he were more powerful than God. That king’s words had the power of life and death over many people. By his commands, he forced whole nations of people to leave their homes and to live in distant parts of the world.
So, God would take away his bold spirit (attitudes) and give him a fearful spirit. He would be so afraid that a mere rumour – a report of danger – would cause him to return home. In verse 9, we shall see what that report was.
The king of Assyria would escape back home because he wanted to be safe. However, he would not be safe even there. In fact, he would be in even more danger, because God had issued his judgment against that king. So, the king would die in Assyria. Verse 37 describes how that happened.
